Horizon Line

What do you think about when you look out at the horizon?

The other day I was looking out at the ocean and wondered what other people on the beach thought when they looked out there too (a bit dramatic, I know, but walk w me).

Me, personally, what I’m thinking about changes day to day. There’s this overwhelming sense of calm the ocean has always given me. I think it’s one of the most beautiful reminders of how much else is out there besides us - how small we all are in comparison no matter how big our thoughts can get.

I got curious and asked my friends what they thought about on the beach, and they all had very similar answers. Some said what they think about on the beach changes often, some said their mind just goes calm, some said they also think about how vast the ocean was in comparison to their worries. It made me realize that everyone looking out at the same thing is thinking and experiencing something different.

I then thought about how much that concept could parallel our own lives. Everyone looking at you is obviously seeing your outside exterior, but how they perceive you is different person to person.

While that can sound scary, I think it can also be a positive thing. Let’s say you have a bad day and are feeling down on yourself - someone else is looking at you differently. Maybe they see something in you that you can’t quite see in yourself. Maybe they admire you for something you’ve never thought about.

You’re now acting as the horizon line. You’re the beauty (the ocean), that shares moments with each of them in ways that impact them all differently.

While, yes, I’m aware this is an extremely sentimental idea (comparing human beings to the literal ocean lol), I think that remembering this general concept is can be a comforting thing when life feels loud.
